As a pet owner, keeping your furry friend cool during the hot summer months is crucial for their health and well-being. One simple and effective way to help your dog beat the heat is by using a cooling bandana. Here are some refreshing tips to ensure your dog stays cool and comfortable this summer.
Opt for a bandana made from a breathable and moisture-wicking material, such as cotton or a cooling fabric. This will help keep your dog's neck cool and prevent overheating.
Before putting the bandana on your dog, soak it in cold water and wring out the excess. The evaporation of the water will create a cooling effect, helping your dog stay comfortable in the heat.
For an extra refreshing boost, place the damp bandana in the freezer for 10 minutes before putting it on your dog. Just make sure it's not too cold to avoid discomfort. Don't do what I did and leave it for too long as it will need to defrost as it will stick together 😂
Throughout the day, re-soak the bandana in cold water to keep it moist and effective at cooling your dog. This will help maintain the cooling effect for longer periods.
This may seem obvious, but the sun moves during the day, so what was a shady spot in the morning, could now be full sun in the afternoon. In addition to the cooling bandana, make sure your dog has access to shade and plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated and cool. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight for extended periods and keep their water in a spot that will not get access to the sun.
During the hottest parts of the day, limit your dog's outdoor activities to prevent overheating. Opt for early morning or evening walks when the temperatures are cooler. Some dogs can be more prone to people pleasing and will just keep going until they drop. It is important to understand your dog and ensure they take a rest when needed. I know for my boys, if they lie down on a walk because they are hot, I let them. It is important to listen to them if they are telling you it is too much.
If your dog tends to overheat easily, consider using a cooling mat in addition to the bandana for extra relief. Place the mat in a shady spot for your dog to rest on and make sure that the sun cannot reach this spot at all during the day.
Be aware of the signs of overheating in dogs, such as excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary help.
With the air conditioning off/engine off, the temperature inside a car can climb to around 24°C in just 5 minutes, 27°C in 10 minutes, 36°C in 30 minutes, and a sweltering 46°C within an hour. When temperatures exceed 28°C, a dog’s ability to cool itself through panting is compromised, significantly increasing the risk of heat stroke. Never ever leave your dog in the car, even if you are only going to be "a minute".
